Camera Operator / Editor / Video Journalist

Since October 2005 I have been working full time for the BBC on Points West, Network News, Inside Out and the Politics Show. My three core skills are PSC/studio camerawork, editing and video journalism. This has meant that I no longer have much time for other projects. I will still work on music videos and short films etc if it's a project that interests me and it's a short shooting schedule.
Tamar - Source to Sound
Director / Camera Operator / Editor
June - September 2010
I was commissioned to make a film for the ICCI 360 Festival in Plymouth. I made a film of a sunrise to sunset journey down the River Tamar from where it rises just a few miles from the North Devon/Cornwall coast to Plymouth Sound.
My project pitch described the project as... "In a succession of fluid camera movements the film will carry the viewer along the beautiful 50 mile long journey. Combining a mixture of landscape, macro and underwater photography it will take in the varied landscapes of steep gorges, ancient woodlands and mining remains that combine to make the Tamar Valley both an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Status.
The film will also reflect the many ways that people use the Tamar today for recreation, agriculture and industry.
The soundtrack will be an original score composed using elements of natural sound gathered along the route combined with minimal instrumentation."
With no budget and only 4 days to recce and shoot it that desciption proved a little ambitious but I'm pleased with the result as were the ICCI team. I also used the film as a chance to experiment with a my newly acquired Nikon D90 dslr. I found it can produce some great images but is frustratingly limited in it's lack of manual controls and extrernal audio input.
The film was shown in the Igloo Vision dome on 5 HD screens with 6.1 surround sound.
It doesn't really compare with watching the film in the dome it was made for but the interactive player below is an attempt to make the film work for a single screen. Thanks to Keith at The Chemistry Set for helping me realise it. Depending on the speed of your connection and processor the film may stutter at times. Try hitting restart and it should work better the second time.

Special thanks go to Ali Chant of Toybox Studios who provided the original score. For one night during the festival the film was also accompanied by an amazing live performance from the Voces choir.
